The Photo essay is a collection of images that are stylistically or thematically unified in order to tell a story. We will explore the idea of story and how to capture the audience and tell a particular tale. The class will cover basic photography, and the students will be able to tell a fiction or non-fiction story. The class will shoot on 35mm cameras, and we will critique and discuss each other’s work, as well as looking at master photographers’ works and essayists. The year will end with a final gallery showing of the students’ work.

Andrew Davis's Proposal

For my project I want to shoot a fictional story. In my story I will be taking pictures of 2 friends and the adventures they go on though out their lives. I am not sure if I want to put video in it but I will figure that out later in the trimester.

“When I grow up, I want to be a star, I want to be famous, want to see the world...But be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it" (Pussycat Dolls). At a young age I was determined to be a Power-Ranger, wanting to save the world from every bad thing alive thinking that was what I was put on this earth to do. When we are first born are parents look at us and see the cycle being broken, but for some children their parents only see the never-ending cycle of ongoing death, crime and pain. Most children grow up wanting to be doctors, lawyers, chefs, writers, president, or famous. But the reality sometimes is that not everyone will be famous, and I want to show the reality of that truth. By showing this truth I want to photograph young children as what their loving parents want them to be which is the better and the best of this world. To the contrary, I will photograph these young children as what the world [society] plans for them to be. For example drug dealers, criminals in and out of jail, prostitutes etc. I want to show children in a grown-up world.

I want to capture every moment from the climax to the lowest level of pain and hate. By using black backdrops I would accent the emotions in the face rather than focusing on the whole subject on a larger scale. With this whole collection of photo’s I want to evoke emotions of I’m glad that’s not me, and forgiveness. When looking at these images I want the viewer to look back over their lives and maybe make an adjustment, not feeling empathy but feeling more sensibly.

Photo Essay Proposal

September 22, 2010

For my photo essay, I want to focus on comparing and contrasting. I want to take pictures of two extremes and put them next to each other essentially taking two images and creating one. I really like the idea of comparing things, but I think it is boring to just have them individually and it doesn’t really make sense. In my images I am really trying to portray opposites and how opposite things really are. The opposites I was thinking of are…

Hamptons vs NYC

Old vs Young

Light(sunrise) vs Dark(sunset)

Life vs Death

These are all I have at the moment, but I am still brainstorming on more.

Graylen Gatewood: Proposal & Inspiration Slideshow

Proposal:
For my photo essay, I want to make a series of images that convey a feeling of happiness. I think I can achieve this by shooting people doing what they love, and what makes them happy. For example, my mom loves playing guitar. I would shoot her playing guitar. This ties in with my "philosophical ideas" from media class, that everyone should be happy, and that's what is most important in life.

I want to do my project on the contrasts of the country and city. I’m planning on taking pictures on the fields, gardens, beaches and farms out here. Then I’m planning on taking photos of the city and it’s architecture. I’m thinking about incorporating video into both of these segments. The point of this is to show how even though our two areas are fairly close to each other, they are really different.

Proposal

My idea is to take pictures of about 10-15 people that are six years old and older. I want to take a picture of a photo of them from when they were about two to four and either scan it or take a picture of that picture. Then I want to put it on my computer and once I’ve taken the photos of them at the age they are now, I want to put the two pictures next to each other and see if they facial expressions are the same or have changed.

I was going to take pictures of some kids that are around 6-7, then 9-10, then 15-16, then someone who is in their 20’s, then 30’s, then 50’s, then 80’s.

People I’m thinking of using:

Josh & Gabe

Beau and Mercy

Rose and Renee and Marisa

Devon

Jenn

Jenna and Greg

Mom and Dad

Kate's Proposal

For my photo essay I want to concentrate on gender as viewed by society. What defines femininity? There are women, but within this category there are “girly girls”, “tomboys” and everything in-between. Through my photo essay I want to contrast gender roles. My plan is to have two photos displayed side by side. One photo will be very feminine and “girly” in subject matter, and the other more masculine and “tomboy-ish”. I want to photograph women through different ages doing activities that reflect their level of femininity. Women are often thought of as only very feminine, but I want to show them doing things that are stereotyped as masculine.

Proposal

For my photo essay I would like to photograph some of the things that make this area so diverse and unique. To show this, I want to show some important parts of my life here as well as things that make this a special place, such as the farms, beaches, towns, schools, and hopefully New York City. I think photos of these things shown in the right sequence with a mix of black and white and digital images, could tell a pretty good story. The message I intend to tell with this is that in the relatively small area of Long Island there is a very diverse group of people and places that make it different than most other areas.

I really liked the first chapter "family farm" (and don't really recommend the other ones, kinda weird). This inspired me because I really liked the pictures of the country and rural areas and since we live in a fairly farm-y part of long island I thought maybe I can do my project including some pictures of that. I also really liked how the photographer added video clips into the story.

Media Storm.

http://mediastorm.com/publication/intended-consequences

What was really interesting about this documentary were the strong images and the stories that were placed with the images. I liked the complex concept about acceptance, and the portraits are beautiful especially with the black background just focusing on the face to show the emotion. Also the fact that it was a documentary was one of the reasons why I liked it.

With this video and set of images I really like how the photographer chose to take an everyday thing, in this case faces, and took a closer look at it to show the finer details. I would be interested in doing something like this for my project, probably not with faces, but with things that are seen all the time, but not often looked at closely. Even if that is not my entire project, I definitely would like to use it for parts because I think it is an interesting technique.

This video was my favorite of all the ones that I watched. While watching it, I was really impacted by the feelings that those women were having. I want my photo essay to have an impact, but without words helping. I just want images, and no words. This video without the words isn't much. The pictures are okay, but without narration wouldn't have as much of an impact.

I chose this one because I thought it was really cool how they showed different peoples lives and how they changed after Katrina hit. Also the way the photographer shot the photos were really cool because they showed how they were affected.

I liked this one because it seemed very different from the other ones on the site. Its more colorful, and seems happier. I also liked the way the camera was angled for a lot of the shots. I liked how they would be zoomed out and show the whole entire person but then zoom in to show a certain facial expression.

This story is very effective because of the photographer's use of contrast. The juxtaposition of old and new really drives the message across. For my story I would like to use this idea of contrasting images side by side. However, I think I will write a fictional story (e.g. three women) rather than follow this photographer's documentary approach.
